Student Leadership

Student leadership is pivotal for any band program to be successful, and NSHS has a proud history of students who have led our band to the highest levels of achievement. Many leadership positions correspond to marching band. Please seeMr. Mallory if you are interested in a leadership position. Remember, it’s YOUR band. Step up and lead!

This upperclassman student helps the director oversee the marching band’s smooth rehearsals and performance preparation. The Drum Major conducts the season’s marching show and leads the pep band in the stands at football games and all performances. They work closely with both Mr. Mallory and other student leaders to build a cohesive leadership team and lead Big Blue to its fullest performance potential. Applicants submit an essay and interview with a panel in the Spring for this prestigious position. Students must march at least one season prior to applying for Drum Major.

The Band Captain, Percussion Captain, and Color Guard Captain are integral to the marching band’s success. The Band Captain leads all wind instruments, Percussion Captain leads the Drumline and Pit, and the Color Guard Captain leads the Color Guard members in perfecting the band’s important visual effects. They each support the Drum Major in helping to lead their large portion of the ensemble through positive example, helpful communication, and active encouragement. They work closely with all student leaders to develop a cohesive leadership team. Applicants submit an essay and interview with a panel in the Spring. Students must march at least one season prior to applying for Captain positions.

Section Leaders are leaders within their instrumental section of the band, and like the Drum Major and Captains, are expected to lead with integrity and positive example. All student leaders must work closely with the Drum Major, Captains, and other Section Leaders to develop a cohesive leadership team. Applicants for Section Leader submit an essay and interview with a panel in the Spring. Students must march at least one season prior to applying for Section Leader.

This position is open to any student enrolled in a concert band course. The Librarian assists the Director with maintaining our extensive Music Library as well as other organizational projects to benefit the Band Program.
